There's a lot of good writing in A Handful of Sand, and there is also some very funny, dark humour in parts. The man is a literary editor, and his description of the chaotic life of a Zagreb publisher is both insightful and amusing.

Ever since elementary school, when I read poetry I have with me a pencil and a tiny notebook, one that fits in every pocket, in which I write words, phrases, verses I like. With Monika Herceg’s book, I started from the title, and I wrote down many things. When I underline something in my notebook, that means I like it more than anything in the world. In Monika’s case, I underlined many things.

There is humour in this book – it is brittle, sharp and it’s nature dark, but it’s there and at times will raise more than a smile to your face.

The book, divided in three separate blocks, opens up a myriad of ‘’big’’ and ‘’small’ – but not less important – subjects, from motherhood and personal history to violence against woman, discrimination in the science community and conquering space for female emancipation in general. Over the mythology of the poetic subject and its dominant ratio, like a secret but present guards, watch the figures of canonic poets, such as Szymborska or Sylvia Plath. This book is a magnet for bullets which aim for gentle creatures hidden deep in our hearts.
