Jagna Pogačnik

Unlike many thrillers we’ve recently been swamped with by the book market, this is very intelligent, dynamic and suspenseful book. But this is not just a thriller, Janeš doesn’t cease to exercise his innate tendency to mix genres, so by shifting his very convincing narrative perspective, he enables the reader a comprehensive insight into the life, habits, worldviews, problems and dilemmas of Zagreb high-schoolers.

Robert Međurečan

Robert Međurečan (Zagreb, 1969) made a big debut in 2008 with his anti-war novel Prodajem odličja, prvi vlasnik (War Decorations, First Owner, Fair Price). Bold, unapologetic, and praised by literary critics, it was shortlisted for all national literary awards, including the coveted Tportal Prize for the best novel of the year and the Jutarnji list Award for best prose work. Kad jaganjci utihnu u Zdihovu (Silence of the Lambs in Zdihovo, 2011), continues a similar literary path, confronting the deviant events in recent history.

His latest novel Krletka za glinenog goluba (Birdcage, 2019), deals with postwar society, its dark layers, intrigues, and corruptions, using the crime novel genre.

Međurečan is also a screenwriter, musician, and composer.

Deutschlandfunk on Goodbye, Cowboy

A colourful and bold book by a daring, imaginative author. The boisterous and unbridled style, vibrant with emotion, is topped off by many a beautiful ending. You put her down, glowing, and think: Wow! That's what you call literature.

Jordi Puntí

Malkoč, who studied literature and was a soldier, speaks about the aftermath without any mania: the after-war period for the Croatian people, those who came back and whose head and body were boiling with past, difficulties in trying to see normal life as normal. However, the most surprising is the fact that he pronounces it with almost devastating simplicity, no big words, from the picaresque perspective and with bestiality as a refuge. When I read his book in peace, I laughed and got goosebumps at the same time.

Wortlandschaften on Goodbye, Cowboy

…a wild ride through the dusty streets of a coastal city in Dalmatia; clouds of memories are stirred up and verbal hot lead fills the air. The dust settles to reveal a subtle and cleverly crafted family story, which revolves around a pervasive past waiting to be addressed.

Nikola Petković, Novi list

This book builds upon the holy triad of beauty, truth and good, arranging and rearranging those value into a dense word forest that makes you want to wander without aim. No matter which way you entered it and where you are, you walk hand in hand with the author, led by the unspoken promise of necessary co-dependency between reading and writing. To the author, my advice is Run, Suzie, run… toward new horizons of sinfully delightful observation. We could all use a little more sin in our lives, observed and disregarding of all rules.
