Ivana Sajko

Ivana Sajko (Zagreb, 1975) graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Art and received her Master’s degree at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. She is one of the editors of the performance art magazine Frakcija and the literary magazine Tema, as well as the co-founder of the theatre group BAD co. She was a longstanding lecturer of Dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, as well as the editor and host of V-efekt, TV show on contemporary theatre. She published several play collections and prose works, and her novel Rio Bar was awarded with Ivan Goran Kovačić Prize for best prose book. In a collaboration with the composer David Simons, she published the music CD Mass for election day silence.

Her play Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose was commissioned for the Steirischer Herbst Festival in 2008, and had its premiere with the Wunderbaum theatre group, while her play Scenes with an apple was commissioned for the Stadtheater Bern, premiering in 2009, directed by Dora Schneider. Her text Introduction to Disjunction was commissioned for the Steirischer Herbst Festival 2010 as a part of the project “The Encyclopedia of Unlived Life” by Marian Pensotti.

In 2018 Ivana Sajko and her translator Alida Bremer received the prestigious international prize – 10. Internationaler Literaturpreis – for the German edition of Liebesroman, the first German edition of her Love Novel.

Tomica Šćavina

Tomica Šćavina was born in 1975 and is a Croatian writer and poet. She holds a degree in Psychology from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb.

Her first novel, A Ship for Lajka, was shortlisted for the VBZ Prize for Best Unpublished Novel, while her second novel, The Return of a Genius, earned her two awards: the Sfera and Artefakt prizes. Her third novel, A Room at the Bottom of the Sea, was also shortlisted for the VBZ Prize. She has published two poetry collections, The Ornaments of a Fall and A House of Wind, as well as two children's books, The Tamer of Clouds and The Love Legend. In 2025, her fourth novel, Silenced Tongue, was published.

Šćavina taught the Psychology of Creativity and Psychology of Characters courses at Vern University in Zagreb. She has participated in artistic residencies in Florida, Rhodes, Idaho, Alabama, Latvia, Finland, and Norway. She is a member of the Croatian Writers’ Society and the Croatian Freelance Artists’ Association.

The importance of Taboo trilogy is in its ability to convey modern-day meaning to contemporary readers while talking about Viktor Tausk; to function as a metaphor, and to show what it’s like to live in our eternally miserable present time. What pertains to our condition is Evil, and perpetual twilight state, the time that stands still, but for which we all know that it inevitably sinks into darkness, into the deepest night, leading to the moment when individuals become victims of experiments, or in other words, to the moment when freedom disappears.

Croatia at the Leipzig Book Fair

This year Croatia was represented at the Leipzig Book Fair by authors Daša Drndić, Ivana Šojat Kuči, Ivana Simić Bodrožić, Milana Vuković Runjić, Branko Čegec, Marko Pogačar and Daniel Rafaelić.
The program of the Croatian program at the Leipzig Book fair was Alida Bremer.
The programme took place both at the Book Fair venue and at several locations in the city.
Croatian stand was hosted by KURS organization form Split.

Dorta Jagić

Dorta Jagić (Sinj, 1974) graduated in Religious Studies from the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. She writes poetry, short prose, plays, picture books, and theatre criticism, works as a translator from English and German, and teaches poetry creative writing. Her stories and poems have been translated into more than twenty languages in acclaimed literature magazines.

She attended numerous residencies and international poetry festivals. She also worked as an author and editor on several Croatian and foreign projects combining poetry and other artistic expressions – dance, design, and music. Dorta Jagić won several important awards and recognitions, including Goranovo proljeće in 1999, The Balkan Grand Prize for Poetry in 2007 (awarded by the International Academy Orient-Occident at the poetry festival “Curtea de Arges Poetry Nights“ in Romania), The European Poet of Freedom Literary Prize 2014 (awarded by the city of Gdańsk), the Goranov vijenac Award 2017 and Višnja Machiedo Award in 2019.
